Meetings

  • The next meeting will be December 8th 2011.

Jonathan Kollasch will present on open source software used for amateur astronomy.

  • The election for 2011-2012 was held Oct 13, 2011 and the results were:

    President: Jonathan Kollasch
    VP: Scott Prader
    Pressmaster: Paul Cowley
    Secretary/Treasurer: Brad Boeckmann

Past President Matt Steven conducted the election, and hopes that the club will shuffle the officer roles annually so that the work doesn't all fall on one person for too long!

  • At the August meeting of AmesLUG, people showed up with various pieces of computer hardware that generally works well with Open Source Software to buy, sell or trade.

Not everything was sold, so some people held onto some things. If you're ever looking for a spare keyboard, motherboard or fan, don't hesitate to ask at a future meeting. Someone might just have what you're looking for!

  • AmesLUG has received a fair amount of help from a few members, but overall still needs more direction and formalization to be a lasting club.

    That's where you come in.

The next meeting will be Thursday Oct 13th and hopefully we will all walk away from it with a new slate of officers and a set of program ideas for the coming year.

Matthew Steven will continue to support the club, though he will not continue to serve as president/program chair in anticipation of an upcoming move to another part of the country this year.

  • Rob Malda resigned from Slashdot a few weeks ago, and for wont of a better meeting topic, we're calling it a roundtable, starting with the topic of "news for nerds."

How do you get your news? From where? On what devices?

Other than that, it's open season. Bring your Linux/UNIX questions, and maybe a few bash or vim tips to share.

Find us at the Ames Public Library (515 Douglas). To get to the Founder's Suite, go to the second level (stair near the Information Desk on your left), follow the winding hallway to the back, and turn left in the large hallway. Meeting starts at 7:30pm.

  • At this months meeting, there weren't any presentations, but some members brought some computers that they had built themselves or had customized in some way.

For instance, a computer was on display that had a hand-made wooden case.

A new member also showed up and great conversation was enjoyed by all. Discussions of a technical nature ensued.

    Officers that attended:
    President
    Vice President
    Secretary/Treasurer

  • The next meeting will be a buy/sell/trade of computer hardware. Within reason, of course, there isn't a lot of room for a lot of gear, so bring a few things that you don't need but that someone else might be interested in.

For example, hard drives might be a good item to trade since they work just about anywhere, but RAM for your old laptop probably wouldn't because it is very system specific.

  • Back in May, we had a meeting and it's been quite awhile since I've found the time to get these minutes together.

Matthew Steven gave a talk on his new Android Tablet that he managed to hack to run Linux. Since the entire thing was recorded and properly put online, you may now view it at your leisure. Previous and subsequent videos will make their way to the site as well, which is here.

The video itself can be quickly viewed by clicking here.

  • AmesLUG is one year old this month!

The theme of the next meeting is "DIY" (do it yourself). You should bring in a computer, device, or even a bit of software that you put together in an interesting way.

This meeting will be informal, and all are welcome, whether they have questions about how to do something new or want to just socialize a bit.

Find us at the Ames Public Library (515 Douglas). To get to the Founder's Suite, go to the second level (stair near the Information Desk on your left), follow the winding hallway to the back, and turn left in the large hallway.

  • Security Expert Josh More visited AmesLUG to give a talk about web security. His talk was well received, and included a great overview of useful software and techniques to properly secure web sites.

Some topics covered included Mod_Security (and a few ideas for unconventional uses of rulesets), techinques for locking down Apache, and a number of useful modules.

Josh covered his usual technique for setting up virtual hosting environments, and talked about frontend application level firewalling with products such as Incapsula.
